Music Then and Now

Kelly (Harvard U.) presents non-majors with a music appreciation text that acquaints them with all historical periods of Western music through 28 specific pieces. Chapters are arranged chronologically by musical period, with general introductions to styles, then chapters focusing on specific pieces in their cultural context, with discussion of the setting, the music itself, and the performance, as well as sections linking the past to the present day. Also included are composer biographies, listening guides, and an introductory unit on fundamental concepts and forms. Online access to streaming music, quizzes, activities, videos on how to listen, instrument and opera videos, playlists, an ebook, and other tools is included. A supplemental CD is also available.
