This volume represents an attempt to lay out the established black letter international law governing slavery and lesser types of human exploitation as it developed through modern history and exists today. Focusing on international legal developments from the 1926 Slavery Convention onwards, Allain (public international law, Queen's U., Northern Ireland) identifies what forms of exploitation qualify as slavery and describes other forms of servitude that are covered by international law, including debt bondage, forced labor, forced marriage, prostitution, and trafficking, while analyzing gaps in the current legal framework constituted by general international law, human rights law, humanitarian law, labor law, and the law of the sea.
