Entering the Frame

Lumley (Italian cultural history, U. College London) examines the found-footage and archival films of Italian film-makers Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi produced over the 35-year-period from the 1970s to 2010 with two goals in mind. Firstly to summarize the information about the oeuvres of the filmmakers, including those works that have yet to be transferred from 8mm and those that were shown as a part of art performances and/or installations and secondly to analyze the themes and evolution of the film-makers. Key themes include Armenia (Gianikian is of Armenian ancestry); war; fascism and colonialism; and history, the body, and the death of cinema. Robert Lumley is Professor of Italian Cultural History at University College London. He studied modern history at the University of Oxford and was a researcher at the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham. His publications include States of Emergency: Cultures of Revolt in Italy from 1968 to 1978 (1990) and Arte Povera (2004), as well as the edited volumes The Museum Time-Machine (1987) and Italian Cityscapes: Culture and Urban Change in Contemporary Italy (with John Foot, 2004).
