The Teachings of Syrianus on Plato's Timaeus and Parmenides

Wear (classics, Franciscan U. of Steubenville, Ohio) presents a revision of her 2005 PhD dissertation at Trinity College, Dublin on the teachings of Syrianus, who succeeded Plutarch of Athens as head of the Athenian school of Platonism from 432 to 437. The teachings are best known through the writings of his well-published pupil and picked successor, Proclus, she says, and his own extant works are scarce. She gathers fragments revealing his views of the two dialogues on facing pages of Greek and English. Her introduction discusses his life and works, philosophical position, problems of her methodology and his, previous scholarship, and her edition.
