In this collection of archival and critical work by the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage Project at the U. of Houston, contributors examine the progress of the project and its legitimacy and acceptance in the academic canon. The project, which seeks to recover texts written by Hispanics from the sixteenth century to 1960, understands the US not only as a complex multicultural society and a multilingual one, and the contributions of this volume reflect this understanding with the general topics of rethinking Latino/a subject positions; negotiating cultural authority and the canon; developing orality, performance and the project's archive; re-contextualizing Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton, and a set of multilingual bibliographic reports on new Mexicanas and Chicanas publications and early New Mexico criticism.
