Bakhtin Between East And West

Until recently, notes Zbinden (honorary research fellow, Bakhtin Centre, U. of Sheffield, UK), there has existed a mutual incommunicability between Russian scholars of literary theorist and philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin and their counterparts in the west. She analyzes the origins and evolution of this divide as Bakhtin's works were translated and transmitted from their native Russian context to various western settings, paying particular attention to the influential French language studies of Bakhtin by Julia Kristeva and Tzvetan Todorov, interpretation of Bakhtin's concept of sociality in Quebecois readings, and Russian receptions of western Bakhtin studies.
