Septuagint and Reception

The Septuagint is the Koine Greek version of the Hebrew Bible and, having been translated between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC, is the oldest of the ancient translations of the Hebrew Bible into Greek. This collection, edited by Cook (U. of Stellenbosch, South Africa), contains 21 papers mostly drawn from a August 2008 conference of the Association for the Study of the Septuagint in South Africa. Topics addressed include the role of external traditions in the Septuagint, the literal character of the Greek translation of Lamentations, ancient Egyptian elements in Hebrews 1, the use of names as evidence of the Septuagint as a source for Josephus' Antiquities, the reception of the Susanna narrative in early Christianity, the role of metatexts in the translations of the Book of Aristeas and the Septuagint, Judith as therapeutic narrative, and speech acts and other performative elements in Susanna.
