The 160 or so invited and contributed papers report the research to date on the microstructure, processing, and properties of the compounds and their use in structural applications. Several of those on the titanium-aluminides focus on dislocation-level mechanisms to explain the observed microstructure-property relationships; others look at creep, fatigue, and processing as titanium-aluminide systems mature toward applications. The point defects in the mechanical properties of iron-aluminides and nickel-aluminides are also explore. Among the transition-metal silicides examined are niobium-silicides, which are described as having excellent fracture toughness and creep strength, though oxidation resistance remains a concern just opposite to molybdenum-silicides. A number of the accounts of Laves phase alloys consider mechanisms for promoting twinning as a means to improve low-temperature toughness.
