Structure-Property Relationships in Biomineralized and Biomimetic Composites：VOLUME1187

The symposium, paid for by the US Department of Energy, explored relationships between structure and function in natural biological tissues, and in materials that have been designed to mimic either the function or the structure of such biological materials. The 25 papers also look at the reversible deformation and fracture mechanics of biological composites, biomaterials in tissue engineering, and high-resolution imaging techniques for characterizing organic-inorganic composites. The invited papers discuss wood and paper as materials for the 21st century, combined AFR-SEM for mechanical testing of fibrous biological materials, the role of the organic component in the mechanical behavior of biomineralized composites, and the quantitative mechanical and chemical imaging of bone from Dmp2 null mice.
