Counter to the Scholastic conception of relation as an accidental property of a thing being-toward-another, this book views relation as the minimally central theme and structure of philosophy. In 15 mostly previously published essays from the 1980s and 1990s (a couple translated from French), Gasche (comparative literature, State U. of New York, Buffalo) traces the idea from when philosophers did not even have a term for "relation" through its ascent in medieval and modern inquiry. In studying the works of such as Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, and Derrida, he argues that relation is central to their thought and anything but formalist. Rodolphe Gasche is Eugenio Donato Professor of Comparative Literature at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is the author, most recently, of The Wild Card of Reading: On Paul de Man.
