Banning junk food in schools is a reaction to reports that show the number of severely obese children since 1980. The situation is so bad that the US Surgeon General declared it a national epidemic.
Governments in some other countries have also taken similar actions. In the UK, for example, the government has looked at the possibility of taxing unhealthy food to make it less attractive for people to buy.
But a group has set up to defend people's right to eat whatever they like, even if it is unhealthy. The new group, called the Free Society, argues that the UK government has no right to force people into eating "healthy" foods. Its leader, Simon Clark, says, "If people wish to eat themselves to death by eating too much fatty foods, that has to be their choice. It is up to them how they wish to live their lives."
And banning the sale of junk food is costing the American schools money in terms of lost sponsorship fees and rental income from vending machines. It is estimated that schools taking a stand against the role of junk food have together lost about $750 millions a year from the companies that provide such food. Simon Clark says, "Losing this money means that schools have to cancel healthy activities such as sports camping trips. So the situation is not as simple as it might appear."
