Educating for Democratic Consciousness—Counter-Hegemonic Possibilities

This collection of 18 essays, presented as separately authored chapters that are effectively standalone, explores critical and counter-hegemonic pedagogies that foster democratic consciousness, as well as critical perspectives on neoliberal subjectivity's monopoly on democratic consciousness. The essays have an internationalist orientation and draw on examples from across the world. Some are focused on classroom settings, while many others are oriented toward popular formats. Specific topics include public education in the age of empire, debates on language and schooling, neoliberal knowledge imperialism, multiculturalism and democratization in Switzerland and Canada, and more. The contributors are educators from around the world, mostly university professors with backgrounds in education, cultural studies, international relations, and sociology.
