Though born in the U.S., Garidel was part of the New Orleans Creole community, and often speaks as an outsider observing mainstream American society of the time. Michael Bedout Chesson, Professor of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, is the author of Richmond after the War, 1865-1890.
