The Superintendent's Fieldbook ─ A Guide for Leaders of Learning

Harvey et al., who are associated with the National Superintendents Roundtable, the Danforth Foundation Forum, and universities, present a guide for new and veteran school leaders in all types of districts that draws on research with 300 superintendents (members of the National Superintendents Roundtable and the Danforth Foundation's Forum for the American School Superintendent) to explain the components of the job: leadership; governance; accountability, learning, and value-added assessment; race and class issues, especially closing the achievement gap and the element of poverty; developing principals; collaborating with other government agencies; and engaging the community. The final chapter links these components to theories of organizational leadership, with additional research on school reform for this edition. It reflects the new school policy and political environment and new technologies; adds the experience of 100 school leaders to the 200 in the previous edition, with new organizational leadership material; and reflects the latest thinking in learning and assessment, including the debate about performance-based teacher compensation.
