Michael Klein on the Targums ― Collected Essays 1972-2002

This volume collects 22 essays by the late Klein (formerly, Biblical literature, Hebrew U. College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Israel) on the targumim, Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible. The essays illustrate Klein's scholarship in three key areas: the preparation and publication of critical scientific editions with commentary, analysis of the varieties of targumic method as applied to different texts, and bibliographic studies. Many of the included essays were in the process of being revised and updated in light of recent scholarly developments by Klein, but unfortunately he passed away prior to the completion of the work, so the essays are presented here in their original, non-revised form. Michael L. Klein, Ph.D. (1979), Hebrew University of Jerusalem, held the Effie Wise Ochs Chair in Biblical Literature at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Jerusalem. He published critical editions of several important versions of the Palestinian Targums.
