Dies Irae ― A Guide to Requiem Music

Chase (music, Pace U., White Plains, NY) has written an impressive compendium of requiem music, beginning with the Middle Ages and including a full treatment of the eastern orthodox churches. The chapters are arranged in two sections; the first eight are chronological from Gregorian requiem mass to the 20th century. The next seven chapters feature the requiem style of as many traditions: Dies Irae, Anglican, German, Byzantine-Greek, Russian, Serbian, and Armenian Orthodox. A list of composers and their compositions make up each chapter. The entries for each include a short biography and discussion of the requiem, including its orchestration, voicing, editions, and a discography. A substantial bibliography is included.
