Brief Introduction
Payment plays a critical role in the business and trade field. It involves
the final benefits of buyers and sellers, importers and exporters. In
international trade, payment is more complicated, because it can be made
by various means, among which Letter of Credit, Remittance and
Collection are usually used.
Letter of Credit (L/C) It is defined as an undertaking by an issuing bank to the
beneficiary to make payment within a specified time, against the presentation of documents
which comply strictly with the terms of credit. It
verifies that the payment will be guaranteed when the
bank is presented with bill of lading and freight
documents.L/C is divided into Irrevocable Letter of
Credit, Confirrned Letter of Credit, Standby Letter of
Credit and so on.
The advantage of this way is to be safer for the seller to collect money. In this way,
documentary credits provide a high level of protection and security to both buyers and sellers
engaged in international trade. The disadvantage is that the means is strict with documents and
the banking cost is higher; it needs that the seller has credit in the bank and doesn’t do well in
cash flow.
Remittance Remittance refers to the payment towards the satisfaction of a debt, whether
in cash or cash equivalents, such as checks, drafts and other negotiable instruments. In other
words, it is the transfer of money from one party to another through banks. The method of
remittance is listed as follows: Telegraphic Transfer (T/T), Remittance by Banker's Demand
Draft (D/D) and Mail Transfer (M/T).The advantage of this method is convenient, quick and
flexible; its disadvantage is that the credit and safe are lower than those of Letter of Credit.
