An Intercultural Theology of Migration ─ Pilgrims in the Wilderness

Taking the struggle of Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong as a case study, Cruz (Catholic studies, DePaul U., Chicago) explores the dynamics of an intercultural theology of migration. In particular, she identifies, describes, and analyzes the theological relevance of the central but doubled-edged role of religion that is woven into the dialectic between oppression and liberation. She also considers whether the theology she develops might contribute to the Theology of Struggle in the Philippines itself, given that the contexts are so different. Among her topics are mapping the oppression of the Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong, theological challenges and perspectives arising from their struggle, Delores Williams' theology of survival quality of life and Jung Young Lee's theology of marginality as theological markets, and god talk of a feminist theology of struggle in the context of migration. Gemma Tulud Cruz, Ph.D (2006) in Theology, Radboud University Nijmegen, is Visiting Assistant Professor in Catholic Studies and an affiliate of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University in Chicago. She has published about thirty book and journal articles and has been invited to speak on migration and other topics in various conferences in Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia.
