Recusant Translators ― Elizabeth Cary and Alexia Grey

Volume 13 of a collection of writings in English from 1500 to 1750, both by women and for and about them. The series provides an extensive collection of the separately published writings reprinted so as to make available the texts upon which the field of feminist criticism of the early modern period is based. The facsimile copies of the texts incorporate significant variants (usually in appendices) and are preceded by short introductions giving an overview of the life and work of the writer along with a survey of important scholarship. This volume covers Cary and Grey, who were among those recusants whose activism resulted in fines and prison sentences, and whose translations of Catholic works helped to propagate a faith stigmatized and prohibited in an officially Protestant country.
