The key question of the Mexican Revolution, believes LaFrance (history, Benmerita U. Autonoma de Puebla, Mexico), concerns the ability of the Mexican central state to suppress the deep desire for local autonomy that was a driving force of the Revolution. To address this question he analyzes military, economic, and political changes in the state of Puebla from 1913 to 1920, paying particular attention to how different social classes' understandings and preferences concerning autonomy conditioned the struggle between the major revolutionary factions: the Constitucionalistas led by Venustiano Carranza, Alvaro Obregon, and Pablo Gonzalez and the Convencionistas of Emiliano Zapata and Francisco "Pancho" Villa.
