Common Core Standards for Elementary Grades K-2 Math & English Language Arts ― A Quick Start Guide

This text is a guide to the Common Core Standards for educators teaching kindergarten through 2nd grade, adopted by the vast majority of US superintendents in 2009. Organization is in three parts on English language arts and literacy (ELA/literacy), mathematics, and lesson-planning. The sections introduce the Common Core Standards and overview their content, showing the connections between standards. The ELA/literacy section advances anchor standards for each grade and is divided into four "strands": reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language. The section on mathematics is organized into two sets on conceptual content necessary for learning more advanced math and practices that are essential for students to develop. Each math subject-area is divided into a subsection for each grade and introduced by connecting to mathematical practice. They include counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. The last section offers guidance on lesson planning and several sample lesson plans in each grade for ELA/literacy and math.
