A New History of Asian America

A New History of Asian America is an updated, synthetic, and interpretive history of Asians in the United States from the late 18th century to the present. The book illustrates for the undergraduate student the distinct aspects of the Asian American experience while presenting the narrative against the major trajectories and turning points of US history during the same period.

The book covers themes such as imperialism, transnationalism, assimilation, race and citizenship, intra-Asian relations and construction of the category of "Asian American", as well as topics of specific concern to Asian-Americans within the flow of US history, including the construction of the railroad, the "Yellow Peril", and the internment of Japanese citizens during World War II. Using the newest research in the field, Shelley Lee has brought forward the story of the many strands of Asian American history to show that Asian citizens of the US are Americans too.

A robust companion website will include pedagogical aids for students such as primary documents, a timeline, online resources and links, videos, and images.
