Manifest Destiny and the New Nation (1803-1860)

This 8x10.25" two-volume reference contains a total of 61 complete and excerpted primary source documents accompanied by analysis essays, along with 80 one-page lesson plans based on specific readings. The documents include speeches, court cases and opinions, legislation, treaties, journals, letters, sermons, and book excerpts; they reveal a range of voices, including the voices of women, the enslaved, indigenous peoples, immigrants, and laborers, as well as more well-known historical figures. Each primary source is 2,000 words, and is accompanied by a 4,000-word analysis essay with an introduction to the author's life and a close reading of the document's rhetoric, social and political implications, and how the author's social or class position impacts the author's perspective. In Volume 1, documents are grouped in sections on antebellum law and politics, manifest destiny, and the spirit of reform. Readings in Volume 2 fall under themes of African American protest literature, the new American identity, religious expansion, and Native Americans. The lessons plans offer overview and comprehension questions and ideas for response papers. Appendices offer chronologies and a list of web resources.
