Wave Propagation for Train-Induced Vibrations ― A Finite/Infinite Element Approach

Yang (National Taiwan U.) and Hung (National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, Taiwan) develop the theoretical principles and numerical techniques on infra-structural vibration caused by the wave propagation of the ground and the vibration of buildings located alongside the railways. Their research is both informed by and needed for the high-speed trains that are being planned and built on Taiwan and in mainland China, typically on elevated bridges to provide an uninterrupted right of way. Among the topics are elastic waves in half-space due to vehicular loads, two-dimensional finite/infinite element method, characteristics of foundation vibrations, wave barriers for vibration isolation of foundations, and soil vibrations caused by underground moving trains.
