Reassembling the Fragments ― Voice and Identity in Caribbean Discourse

Contributors to this book are Caribbean academic librarians and professors of literature, linguistics, cultural studies, English, language education, and second language education. They offer a special focus on the work of professors Bridget Brereton, Barbara Lalla, and Ian Robertson, all of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. The first part of the book provides tributes and critical appraisals of the work of the three professors; these essays are based on literary and linguistic papers presented at the 2011 commemoration conference held at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. Some topics are Lalla's contribution to code-switching phenomena in oral and scribal discourse, and Robertson's re-visioning of the Creole voice. Papers in Part 2 (from the same conference) deal with historical trajectories of creolizations. Some subjects include a comparison between the development of Palenquero Caribbean Creole and Swahili-Spanish interlanguage, and the role of sociohistorical factors in the processes of Creolization.
