Aspects of Sovereignty ─ Sino-Swedish Reflections

Whereas sovereignty became the hot topic in the West in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia, the modern concept of sovereignty was introduced in China in the nineteenth century forcefully and unequally by the British Empire. Sevastik (humanitarian law, Lund University, Sweden) seeks to understand what effects globalization has had on the traditional views of sovereignty seen from Chinese and European (primarily Swedish) perspectives. The book offers a variety of points of view and approaches as it draws from legal scholars and political scientists, and reflects legal philosophy, public international law, international human rights law, economic law, and international relations. Per Sevastik works at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian law, situated at Lund University in Sweden. He holds a LL.M from the University of Stockholm, a LL.M in International Legal Studies from Harvard Law School, and a Doctor of Law in Public International Law from the University of Uppsala. He has been Guest Professor at Peking University Law School 2006–2007, and since 2009 appointed as Guest Professor at the same university for a three-year period where he also has lectured at various other universities in China. His most recent publications are a book titled (A book on international law, Norstedts Juridik, 2009), which he edited and to which he contributed chapters, and a chapter on China in a comparative constitutional law publication (Iustus, 2012).).
