蔡志忠，1948年2月2日，出生于臺灣彰化。1963年起開始畫連環漫畫。1971年任光啟社電視美術指導。1976年成立遠東卡通公司。1981年另創龍卡通公司，拍攝了《七彩卡通老夫子》《烏龍院》等卡通電影，《老夫子》曾獲金馬獎最佳卡通電影長片獎。1983年因格漫畫作品開始在中國臺灣、香港及新加坡、馬來西亞、日本的報刊長期連載。1985年獲選為全臺灣十大杰出青年。1986年《莊子說》出版，蟬聯暢銷排行榜第一名達十個多月。1987年《老子說》等經典漫畫、《西游記38變》等四格漫畫陸續出版，譯本包括德、日、俄、法等，至今已達二十余種語言。1992年開始從事水墨創作。《蔡志忠經典漫畫珍藏本》出版。1993年口述自傳《蔡子說》出版。1999年12月8日獲得荷蘭克勞斯王子基金會頒獎，表彰他“通過漫畫將中國傳統哲學與文學作出了史無前例的再創造”。2011年獲得“金漫獎”終身成就獎。2009年9月，入駐杭州西溪濕地，成立巧克力動漫公司，拍攝世界美術史動畫片。2012年3月，受聘為騰訊網絡動漫平臺首席顧問。2013年7月，蔡志忠諸子百家漫畫系列拍攝水墨動畫，其中260則故事編入中小學教材。
布萊恩·布雅（Brian Bruya），此系列書美國版的譯者，擁有夏威夷大學比較哲學的博士學位。他是中國早期哲學研究領域的專家和翻譯，同時還是一個關于中國哲學研究的網站書海文苑的總編輯。

中國早期思想家的著作，一直影響著中國文化和社會的方方面面，從教育到藝術，從政治和戰爭到日常禮節。而廣受歡迎的漫畫家蔡志忠，一直致力于用他獨特而引入入勝、跨越了語言和文化的漫畫，將這些古代經典著作的智慧帶入現代人的生活。《菜根譚心經（中英文對照版蔡志忠漫畫中國傳統文化經典）》就是他的一部代表作品。該書采用中英文對照的全新編輯方式，用漫畫再現了《菜根譚》和《心經》這兩部國學著作的精華內容，既適合中國讀者學習英文，又適合外國朋友學習中文。

路要讓一步，味須減三分On a path，yield a step；In tasting，share a bite
俠義交友，純心做人Chivalry in making friends，Purity in living life
退即是進，與即是得To retreat is to advance， Togive is to receive
驕矜無功，懺悔減罪Arrogance negates achievement，Repentance annuls misdeeds
動靜合宜，道之真體Movement and stillness in harmony are the，Dao’s genuine body
軒冕客志在林泉，山林士胸懷廊廟Those of coaches and crowns wish for woods and springs，Those of hills and woods yearn for halls and temples
做事勿太苦，待人勿太枯Do not let industry become drudgery，Do not treat others with indifference
知退一步之法，加讓三分之功Know to retreat a step，Try to yield a bit
對小人不惡，待君子有禮Do not despise the underling，Treat the gentleman with propriety
超越天地之外，入于名利之中Transcending heaven and earth，Entering among fame and fortune
修德須忘功名，讀書定要深心Cultivating virtue takes forgetting fame，Acquiring knowledge requires a mind of depth
真偽之道，只在一念The ways of truth and deceit reside in a single thought
忘功不忘過，忘怨不忘恩 Forget achievement but not transgressions，Forget blame but not kindness
惡人讀書，適以濟惡An evilpersons learning，Serves to abetevil
讀書希圣講學躬行，居官愛民立業種德Longfor sageliness in learning， practice what you preach.Care for the people when in office，cultivate virtue in your career
苦中有樂，樂中有苦The delight of ioy is often found in the midst of hardship，The pang of disappointment come in times of fulfillment
謙虛受益，滿盈招損 Modesty brings benefit，Complacency courts danger
勿羨貴顯，勿憂饑餓Do not envy eminence，Do not dread hunger
陰惡之惡大，顯善之善小A hidden evil is a cardinal evil，A flaunted good is a minorgood
憂勞興國，逸豫亡身 A country prospers through worry and toil，The self is lost through idle leisure
一念貪私，萬劫不復A single thought of selfish greed，A thousand pains without return
心公不昧，六賊無蹤 If master of the mind is on alert，The bandits six shall show no trace
勉勵現前之業，圖謀未來之功Pushing the present enterprise，Planning for future success
不著色相，不留聲影Not caught up in material things，Not keeping the sounds and shadows
動中靜是真靜，苦中樂見真樂Tranquillity amid tumult is genuine tranquillity，Pleasure amid hardship is genuine pleasure
多種功德，勿貪權位Strive to cultivate achievement and virtue，Do not covet power and status
文章極處無奇巧，人品極處只泰然A perfect essay takes no unusual skill， A perfect character is simply natural
人生無常，不可虛度Life does not endure，So do not live in vain
持盈履滿，君子兢兢When grasping hold of plenty，A gentlemen treads lightly
大處著眼，小處著手Turn your eyes to the big view，Turn your hands to the details
愛重反為仇，薄極反為喜Love too heavy turns to hate，A meagerjot can turn tojoy
對陰險者勿推心，遇高傲者勿多口Do not open up to the devious，Do not say much to the arrogant
大量能容，不動聲色Forbear much，Reveal little
人乃天地之縮圖，天地乃人之父母People ave microcosms of the universe，The universe is the parent of people
倫常本平天性，不可任德懷恩Family ethics are innate，Without the need for pride or thanks
不夸妍好潔，無丑污之辱Gone with the praise of beauty，Goes insult of the unsightly
應以德御才，勿恃才敗德 Virtue should guide talent，Without talent shirking virtue
窮寇勿追，投鼠忌器Do not pursue a desperate enemy，Careful the object you throw at a mouse
趨炎附勢，人情之常 To flock to power and influence is common to human nature
須冷眼觀物，勿輕動剛腸Observe with a cool eye，Do not rashly vent your spleen
人心惟危，道心惟微When the human heart is unresolved，The moral mind is indistinct
自然造化之妙，智巧所不能及It is the wonder of natural transformations， That cannot be matched by human ingenuity
云去而本覺之月現，塵拂而真如之鏡明 When the clouds are gone，the moon appears，When the dust is cleared，the mirror shines
急流勇退，與世無爭Bravely retreat in rapid currents，Struggle not against the world
文華不如簡素，談今不如述古 Better to have plain simplicity than elaborate embellishment，Better to recount the ancients than discuss the moderns
修身種德，事業之基Cultivating virtue within yourself is the foundation of successful endeavor
心善而子孫盛，根深而枝葉榮With a good head，children and grandchildren prosper；With strong roots，leaves and branches flourish
勿妄自菲薄，勿自夸自傲Do not be quick to belittle yourself，Do not boast or act arrogantly
道乃公正無私，學當隨時警惕The Dao is a public thing，Learning is a home cooked meal
律己宜嚴，待人宜寬Be seveye with yourself and lenient toward others
人情冷曖，世態炎涼Peeples feelings are warm and cold，The worlds atfftude is hot and cool
慈悲之心，生生之機A mind of compassion，A motive for life
為官公廉，居家恕儉In Office，fairness and integrity，At home，tolerance and thrift
處富知貧，居安思危In prosperity，understand poverty，In stability，think about peril
不得罪小人，不奉承君子Do not antagonize the petty one，Do not flatter the gentleman
喜憂安危，勿介于心The vicissitudes of life are not worth dwelling on
宴樂聲色名位，三者不可過貪Parties and pleasure，music and lust， reputation and status，Several things to be approached with temperance
冷靜觀人，理智處世Observe others coolly，Conduct affairs intelligently
躁性僨事，和平徼福A frenzied nature injures the world Peace and harmony invite blessings
惡不可即就，善不可急親Do not immediately，accept rumored evil，Do not immediately approach rumored good
酷則失善人，濫則招惡友Severity drives away good people，Carelessness invites wicked friends

無為之作，優游清逸Doing nothing with nothing to do，Carefree playing in purest leisure
世之廣狹，皆由自造The confines of the world are created by us
樂貴自然真趣，景物不在多遠Taking joy in nature’s delights，Stunning views ape never far
心靜而本體現，水清而月影明The mind quiet，original substance appears，The water clear，the moon’s reflection shines
觀形不如觀心，神用勝過跡用 Better to see the interior than know the exterior，The spirit employed always beats the form employed
心無物欲乾坤靜，坐有琴書便是仙The head free of desire quiets heaven and earth，A home with books and music becomes a magic kingdom
知機真神乎，會趣明道矣 The wonder of knowing the mysteries，The wisdom of seeing delight
萬象皆空幻，達人須達觀 The myriad appearances are empty illusions， The enlightened person must have comprehension
泡沫人生，何爭名利In the bubble that is life，Why fight over fame and fortune
廣狹長短，由于心念Narrow or broad，short or long，they’ye all from the thoughts of the mind
與閑云為友，以風月為家I makefriends with the leisurely clouds and take the scenery as my home
隱者無榮辱，道義無炎涼Recluses have no honor or disgrace，Morality knows neither hot nor cold
隱者高明，省事平安The reclusive one is intelligent，Reducing tasks brings peace
超越喧寂，悠然自適To transcend splendor and solitude，To be at comfort anywhere
得道無牽系，靜躁兩無關Enlightened ones have no attachments，Quiet and calm make no difference
理出于易，道不在遠Understand ing is found in simplicity，Enlightenment isn’t far away
動靜合宜，出入無礙 Movement and stillness come with ease，Leaving and entering without obstruction
執著是苦海，解脫是仙鄉Holding on means a sea of suffering.Letting go means a land of paradise
臥云弄月，絕俗超塵Sleeping and playing in nature，Escaping the dusty world
云中世界，靜里乾坤 A world among clouds，A univPrse in tranquillity
不希榮達，不畏權勢No hope for splendor，No fear of power

富者多憂，貴者多險The wealthy have many worries，The noble have many dangers
處世流水落花，身心皆得自在Live life like flowing water，drooping flowers，The body and mind must always be at ease
處世忘世，超物樂天Living in the world，forget the world，Transcending things，enioy nature
人生本無常，盛衰何可恃Life itself does not endure，How can prosperity be counted on
寵辱不驚，去留無意Scorn or favor brings no surprise，Going or staying makes no difference
苦海茫茫，回頭是岸The sea of suffering is vast and far，Turn your head to the other shore
求心內之佛，卻心外之法Seeking the Buddha on the inside，Spurning the dharmas on the outside
野趣豐處，詩興自涌In the charm of the wilds and places replete，Poetical springs well up from inside
在世出世，真空不空Live in the world，transcend the world，The True Emptiness is not empty
毀譽褒貶，一任世情Praise and slander，libel and fame，Resigned to all the world can give
徹見自性，不必談禪He who knows his original nature has no patience for talk of Zen
真不離幻，雅不離俗The genuine leaves not the illusory，The refined leaves not the mundane
布茅蔬淡，頤養天和A blanket of straw and vegetables plain nourish a natural harmony
斷絕思慮，光風霽月 To cut off all your worries，A sunny breeze，an afterrain moon
操持身心，收放自如Minding the body and mind，Freedom in indulgence and restraint
自然人心，融和一體Nature and the mind，Harmonize as one
雌雄妍丑，一時假相 Winner and loser，beautidul and ugly are just momentary illusions
禍福苦樂，一念之差Good and bad fortune，suffering and joy，There is only the difference of a single thought
若要功夫深，鐵杵磨成針With quiet patience and constant discipline，A foot of iron is ground into a pin
雨后山色鮮，靜夜鐘聲清After a rain，the mountains seem fresh；In the night，a bell rings clear
雪夜讀書夜清，登山遠眺心曠 Snowstorm studying purifies the spirit， Hilltop vistos expond the mind
萬鐘一發，存乎一心A thousand gallons，a singlehair，Each exists within the mind
就身了身，以物付物Understand the self based on the self，Allow for things to take care of themselves
