Space in Language and Linguistics ― Geographical, Interactional, and Cognitive Perspectives

The 27 studies were originally presented at a fall 2009 conference series in Freiburg, Germany, which was called to integrate three aspects of language and space that have been well-researched separately but were lacking interconnections. They are language, space, and geography; grammar, space, and cognition; and language and interactional spaces. The topics include language contact between geographic and mental space, interactional space and the study of embodied talk-in-interaction, what difference space makes for interaction and interaction for space, navigation as a social and spatial task, vernacular and multilingual writing in the mediated spaces of Web-forums for post-colonial communities of practice, and linguistic and topographical references in German Sign Language discourse.
