Line Dancing ― An Atlas of Geography Curriculum and Poetic Possibilities

Hurren (education, U. of Regina, Canada) divides her "atlas" into three chapters. The first is an exploration of semiotic theory and the notion of poetics, an investigation into what the author calls "the relationship between word and world," and a reconfiguration of the field of geography as a cartographic poetics. The second chapter is a search for discussions of language and for writing activities in current geography classrooms, Hurren finding attention to these a rare occurrence. The third is an exploration of poetic possibilities, a playful re-imagining of maps, where a place is not a series of lines and demarcations, but, for example, a diary of what is done in a place or a poem about the place.
