Back in the West' ― Changing Lifestyles in Transforming Societies

Published with the support of a grant from the Estonian government, this volume presents 10 contributed chapters addressing lifestyle trends in Estonia, and lifestyle choices and identities in the context of societies undergoing transformation. The editor's introductory essay emphasizes the importance of studying the concept of lifestyle--and multiple lifestyles--in former Soviet-type regimes where homogenization of the population was the goal and individual autonomy was minimized. Allaste is a sociologist with research interests focusing on young people, subcultures, and new social movements; she's affiliated with Tallinn U., Estonia and has brought together work from her colleagues, primarily, with a few contributors affiliated elsewhere. Airi-Alina Allaste is the Head of the Centre for Lifestyles Studies at Tallinn University. Her research interests focus on young people, subcultures and new social movements. She is the coordinator of the Estonian project on changes in lifestyles and the country coordinator of the FP7 project Memory, Youth, Political Legacy And Civic Engagement.
