Home for the Oscars
The most important annual celebrity event in Show Biz takes place each March, right herein Los Angeles. It's Oscar Night, that dazzling evening when the prestigious Academy Awards arepresented for the year's best achievements in motion pictures.
Giant, golden, 24-foot-high Oscar statues loom outside, and for one day the eyes of theworld focus on Hollywood. But this year, the 76th annual Oscar Awards were presented on Sun-day, February 29, 2004, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland.
The Kodak Theatre's seating capacity is 3,400 with three balcony levels that bring audiencesclose to the theatre stage, which measures 113 feet wide and 60 feet deep. There are also 24 thea-tre boxes with four to six seats each.
When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, movies had just begunto talk. That first Awards ceremony took place during a banquet held in the Blossom Room ofthe Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The attendance was 250 and tickets cost $10.
For the next 14 years, the ceremonies were held in other hotels, where a banquet was held forthe stars. The banquet was dropped after 1944, when the awards ceremony moved to Grauman'sChinese Theatre. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Oscar ceremonies moved to some other theatres aswell.
Finally, in 1969, the Oscars found what'appeared to be a semi-permanent home downtownin the Los Angeles Music Center, where the ceremonies were held for most of the follow-ing years. In the mid-90s they began to alternate between the Music Center and the far largerShrine Auditorium.
