Teaching through Basque ― Achievement and Challenges

This is a special edition of the journal Language, culture and curriculum focusing on teaching in the Basque language in Navarre and the Basque Autonomous Community. Cenoz is a professor of applied linguistics at the University of the Basque Country in Spain. The articles cover areas where many of the inhabitants are bilingual in Basque and Spanish. They evaluate the effectiveness of programs teaching most subjects in Basque, the competence of students in both Spanish and Basque, and the use of Basque outside the schoolroom. One article treats the new situation of immigrants from outside Spain and particularly the responsibility of teaching Moroccan children in their native language, and if so, which of three? Should they also learn Basque or concentrate on Spanish? Parallels to these situations exist in almost every country. Educators and lawmakers would find this of interest. Jasone Cenoz is professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of the Basque Country. Her research focuses on bilingualism and multilingualism in educational settings. She is the editor (in collaboration with Ulrike Jessner) of 'The International Journal of Multilingualism' and 'Aila Review'. She is publications coordinator of AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) and she is the vice-president of IAM (International Association of Multilingualism). She has published widely on bilingualism and multilingualism and her most recent volume is 'Towards Multilingual Education: Basque Educational Research in International Perspective' which will be published by Multilingual Matters.
