A Concise Historical Grammar of the Albanian Language ― Reconstruction of Proto-Albanian

Orel submitted the Russian version of the grammar as a doctoral dissertation to the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1989, and has used it for courses in Russia and for a 1999 graduate seminar at the University of California-Los Angeles. He analyzes the lexical material of the etymological dictionary he has also produced, which should be used as a data base immediately connected with the grammar. He also provides a new detailed description of the linguistic development from Proto-Indo-European to Proto-Albanian to modern Albanian, emphasizing those stages that are of particular interest to him. He covers phonetics, morphonology and word-formation, morphology, and vocabulary. Each section begins with a list of relevant literature and sometimes brief summaries of specific works. Annotation c. Vladimir Orel, Ph.D. (1980) in Linguistics, Russian Academy of Sciences, is the Director of Linguistics of Zi Corporation, Calgary. He has published on historical linguistics including Hamito-Semitic Etymological Dictionary (co-authored, Brill, 1995), The Language of Phrygians (1997), Albanian Etymological Dictionary (Brill, 1998).
