Remembering for the Future ― The Holocaust in an Age of Genocides

These three volumes contain 170 articles and essays presented at a historic conference held in July 2000 in London and Oxford historic in part because it may be the last international, interdisciplinary, and interfaith forum that survivors of the Holocaust will attend. Contributors (including Elie Wiesel, Sir Martin Gilbert, Hubert Locke, and Deborah Lipstadt) explore the latest developments in Holocaust studies, including new looks at the ghetto and national experiences of the Holocaust; representation in art, film and literature; the churches and the Holocaust; teaching the Holocaust; resistance and rescue; survivor testimony; and the future of remembrance. The volumes address history, ethics and religion, and memory, respectively. Volume one begins with studies of twentieth-century cases of genocide, including the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust, and the mass killing in Rwanda and the Balkans. Other topics include the Holocaust's particularity in Minsk and Warsaw, Theresienstadt and Budapest, Lodz and Auschwitz; new research and significant insights about the Final Solution's impact and the responses of the people it targeted; Holocaust denial; and lesser known perpetrators and collaborators, such as Sven Hedin, a Swedish apologist for the Third Reich, and the contribution of scientists to Nazi rule in Germany.
