Though most religions adjure their adherents to perform private acts of charity, says Wittberg (sociology, Indiana U.-Purdue U.) Christianity is rare in constructing and operating formal organizations specifically dedicated to education, health care, or social service. Catholics for the past four or five centuries and Protestants for the past two have been doing so, but she finds that the practice seems to be ending as religious colleges and hospitals in Western Europe and North America cut ties with their parent bodies and hire fewer religiously devoted professionals.
