Postcolonial Film ─ History, Empire, Resistance

A collection of thirty essays with an international list of contributors, this anthology looks at post-colonial film and is intended mainly but not exclusively for academic readers. Topics range from nation and identity in the new German cinema to Japanese horror films and their American remakes. Some contributions are theoretical (lesbianism, cinema, space; theorizing film acting); others are political (politics of loss and trauma in contemporary Israeli cinema; politics of age and disability in contemporary Spanish film; neoliberalism and global cinema), others are closer to film history or film studies (cross-cultural cinema from production to reception; Korea's occupied cinemas 1893-1948; Hollywood melodrama and the New Deal). Rebecca Weaver-Hightower is an Associate Professor of English specializing in postcolonial studies at the University of North Dakota. She is author of Empire Islands: Castaways, Cannibals and Fantasies of Conquest (2007), Frontier Fictions: Settler Sagas and the Origins of Postcolonial White Guilt (in progress), and Associate Editor of The Journal Of Commonwealth and Postcolonial Studies.

Peter Hulme is a Professor in Literature at the University of Essex and author, most recently, of Cuba’s Wild East: A Literary Geography of Oriente. He is Assistant Editor of the journal Studies in Travel Writing.
