European Immigrants in Britain, 1933-50

Among the European peoples immigrating to Britain in the years 1933 to 1950 were members of the Polish army, displaced persons, former prisoners of war from Italy and the Ukraine, and laborers recruited from Germany and other Western European countries. Thirteen papers, drawn from a December 2000 conference held at London's German Historical Institute and lending its name to the title of this volume, are presented by Steinert (history, U. of Wolverhampton, UK) and Weber-Newth (German, London Metropolitan U.) in order to allow for comparative exploration of the experiences of these various groups that led to their immigration as well as British government policies towards them.
