In 1950, a young couple (both WWII veteransa WAVE and an airmanand both with GI Bill journalism degrees) quit their jobs on a South Texas weekly newspaper and embarked upon a 1200-mile bicycle tour through Europe.

They said that only the night before, their father had warned them that if there was ever a bombing raid, they must hide under the sturdy round table.”
