The First International Conference on Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows was held in June 2006 in order to bring together engineers, scientists, and managers from laboratories, industry, government, and academia to exchange recent work in the field of environmental dense and hyperconcentrated flows, with an emphasis on the importance of numerical simulation and experimental measurements. Editors Lorenzini (U. of Bologna, Italy), Brebbia (Wessex Institute of Technology, UK), and Emmanouloudis (Technical Educational Institute of Kavala, Greece) have organized the resulting 34 into sections on debris-flow modeling, debris-flow phenomenology, debris and hyper-concentrated flows, debris flow and landslide phenomena after extreme events, debris-flow mobilization, debris-flow disaster mitigation, and case studies.
