序
If you want to achieve your ideal TOEIC score, you will need to take the test seriously, but that does not mean that the preparation needs to be so solemn. This book is written in the hope that the articles within it are sufficiently interesting to hold its readers’ attention, so that the preparation process is not a dull experience.
Completing these review tests is not meant to simply prepare you for TOEIC, but also to teach you something. I’m sure that you will meet some new things in this book, especially vocabulary, and my intention is for you to learn from it.
Don’t become disappointed from mistakes- learn from them. Many question types are repeated in later tests. If you get them right the second time, then you have accomplished the goal of this book.
I hope that this book helps you reach your desired TOEIC score.
Matthew Gunton

(A) 傷害(v.)

The airplane that departed this morning is heading to Canada.
Questions 170-172 refer to the following diary entries.
Diary entries for a new employee
Day 1: I hate being new! All first days are the same. All I did was fill in countless forms and watch the person who I will be replacing do his job. Hope tomorrow will be better. Got to see the boss a couple of times. He put his head around the door once or twice to see how I was getting on. Seems like a nice guy.
Day2: Still not doing anything. Just trying to learn everyone’s names and who does what.
Day 3: Hard to remember who’s who, but slowly getting there. All I did today was make a few copies and keep watching other people work.
Day 4: The boss seems to be concerned that I am already getting a little frustrated. Assured him that I am not. Need to do a better job at disguising my feelings.
Day 5: Finally given some work to do. Been checking payments all day. Very boring, but just happy to have finally been given something to do. Could have done this on my first day instead of all the watching. A big relief to be doing something that I know I can do well, and to be contributing something. Looking forward to next week!
170. On day 4, what does the new employee think he/she has to do better?

Part7.
解說:原文第四段第一句,“The boss seems to be concerned that I am already getting a little” frustrated,表示老闆擔心他沮喪;第二句,“Assured him that I am not. Need to do a better job at disguising my feelings”,他向老闆保證他沒有沮喪,然後他說自己應該把情緒掩飾的更好,意味他的情緒是沮喪的,要掩飾成相反的滿意樣子,故選(A)。
解說:原文第一段第二句,“All I did was fill in countless forms and watch the person who I will be replacing do his job”,表示第一天只填表格和在一旁看;第二段第一句,“Still not doing anything”,表示第二天跟第一天一樣什麼也沒做;第三段第一句,“All I did today was make a few copies and keep watching other people work”,表示只印了幾張文件就又在一旁看;第四段第三句,“Need to do a better job at disguising my feelings”,他的沮喪是真的,因為他說必須把自己的情緒掩飾好一點,第五段第一句,“Finally given some work to do”,直到第五天他覺得終於有一些工作可做,代表在那之前他認為自己都沒有做些什麼工作,所以前四天的沮喪是因為這個因素,故選(B)。
(A) 失望
