Initial Teacher Education in Schools ― A Guide for Practitioners

School-based initial teacher education (ITE) is defined here as teacher training in school settings. This book presents practice guidelines for pre- and in-service teachers and teacher trainers involved in school-based ITE and gives examples from primary and secondary schools in the UK. The UK perspective continues with a focus on UK programs, standards, and initiatives such as School Direct, Teach First, and SCITT. Each chapter is divided into three sections: Section 1 gives an overview of research and theories, while Section 2 sets out practical implications from research and theories. Section 3 offers case studies from actual practice. Each chapter also includes further reading. Some specific topics include assessment of student teachers, professional development, pastoral care for student teachers, and the difference between mentoring and coaching.
