Date on Database ― Writings 2000-2006

This collection gathers articles published on web sites and in journals by Date, an independent author and consultant specializing in relational database technology. Some of the selections discuss comparatively new topics, such as multiple assignment and temporal data, and others have new things to say about older topics, including principles of normalization and problems of duplicate rows. Because most of the chapters were originally intended to stand alone, each typically contains references, examples, and appendices whose numbering is unique only within the chapter in question. An appendix documents Date's experience in trying to enlist the help of the trade press in his mission to educate the database community on matters related to relational technology. C. J. Date is an independent author, lecturer, researcher, and consultant, specializing in relational database technology, a field he helped pioneer. He is best known for his book, An Introduction to Database Systems (8th edition, 2004), which has sold over 750,000 copies and is used by several hundred colleges and universities worldwide. He is also author of many other books on relational database management, including Logic and Databases: The Roots of Relational Theory (2007). He was inducted into the Computing Industry Hall of Fame in 2004.
