This is a companion volume to Horton's (classical Japanese literature, U. of California, Berkeley) work, The Journal of Socho , a translation of the diary of the medieval Japanese linked-verse ( renga poet, Saiokuken Socho (1448-1532). Horton examines the place of the journal in terms of the author's life and times, and the relationship between politics, patronage, and the creative process. In an overview of the journal, he discusses questions of autobiography and the relationship between the historical author and his literary construct. Each of the three subsequent chapters gives a reading of Socho's journal in the dominant norms of genre utilized by Socho in creating his own literary portrait. Annotation c.
