Scholars have studied how John uses Scripture to do something for and to his community, and have studied the history of that community, notes Clark-Soles (New Testament, Perkins School of Theology), but none of them have studied the two in conjunction. She does so, using a heuristic framework derived from the sociology of religion and the production of culture. Employing the comparative method of social history, she examines the Qumran community and the Branch Davidians as examples of ancient and modern communities, and considers how they both marked boundaries in a radically physical way withdrawing into a separate space and emphasized learning and applying scripture.
