Police Corruption ─ Essential Readings

Police corruption is rampant globally. Because mistrust of the police can undermine a state's security, corruption is an important issue. The readings in this book take stock of the situation in general and in several countries in depth. Most of the selections were first published in journals of criminology and policing. Most have been written since 2000, but there are several from the 1990s and one from 1974. Corruption involves a large gray area of behavior and the very definition is discussed across the first three chapters. Other articles and reports look at, among other things: public confidence in the police in Ghana; measuring attitudes to corruption in Russia; China's "virgin prostitutes" cases; the "Blue Code of Silence", core factors of police corruption across the world; and anti-corruption reform.
