Negotiating Self-determination

Edited by Hannum (international law, Tufts U.) and Babbitt (international politics, Tufts U.), this text contains seven papers that adopt a range of theoretical perspectives to theorize the issue of self-determination in the context of conflict and conflict resolution. Included are a political philosophical analysis of secession as a right, quantitative analysis of the conditions giving rise to secessionist movements when autonomy arrangements are undermined are undone, the economic bases of secession movements, normative change in the interpretation of self- determination by the international legal community, and ethno-cultural aspects of meaningful self-determination.
