New South African Review 4

The death of Nelson Mandela on December 5, 2013, was a wake-up call for South Africans—a time to reflect on what has been achieved since South Africans of all colors voted for the first time in a democratic election. The essays in this fourth volume of the the New South African Review examine and analyze a broad spectrum of issues affecting the country, including topics as diverse as the state of organized labor; food retailing; electricity generation; access to information; civil courage; the school system; and South Africa’s relationships with northeast Asia, with Israel, and with its neighbors in the southern African region. Taken together, these essays give a multidimensional perspective on South Africa’s democracy as it turns 20.
