Anselm Of Canterbury ― The Beauty Of Theology

Asking what drives Anselm's (1033-1109) theological agenda, Hogg (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, US) finds that of course it is in part a desire to teach those around him the elements of the Christian faith. But also, he says, he is interested in exploring the deeper questions of the faith to satisfy his own curiosity and enjoyment, more simply, to experience the divine. The artistry in his prayers and the beauty in his style, therefore, are not simply craft for him, but a fulfillment of the responsibility to search out and the opportunity to experience as much of the beatific vision as possible this side of heaven.
