Translating Others

This is the first volume of a two-volume set. Specialists in translation--some from the perspective of a specific language and literary tradition or a particular region or culture-- offer theoretical and methodological reflection on the practice, as well as a number of case studies mostly from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. No single model emerges, but rather the prospect of a splintered discipline that must learn to speak several tongues, recognize the contingency of theory, and seek to make its own uncertainties productive. Most of the 31 essays, presented in two volumes (each sold separately), are from the project Translations and Translation Theories East and West, conducted jointly by University College London and the School of Oriental and African Studies. The first volume covers grounding theory, mapping concepts, and reflexive praxis; the second memory and emergence, hearing voices, and image and agency.
