While the United States was undergoing a move toward a more fundamentalist Christian perspective of science in the early 20th century, Britain's religious and science communities were making an attempt to reconcile their differences. Bowler (history of science, Queen's U., Belfast) explores this attempted rapprochement, particularly between the more liberal religious groups and the more conservative scientists, and explains its failure, in part due to the opposition of younger scientists and more conservative Christians as well as the generally increased social and political concerns of the 1930s. 作者簡介
Peter J. Bowler is a professor of the history of science at the Queen's University of Belfast. He is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, including Life's Splendid Drama: Evolutionary Biology and the Reconstruction of Life's Ancestry, 1860-1940, also published by the University of Chicago Press.
